Honor. Justice. Brains.

Perched on the border between civilized ghoulkind and the chaos of the barbaric slickskins, the zombie sheriff must rescue his kidnapped friends from the dastardly McFarland and his notorious gang of outlaws. He assembles a posse of the most talented zombies around, including Mungo, a zombie chef interested in locally sourced ingredients; Bub, a barber whose enormous strength somewhat makes up for his complete lack of intelligence; and Dr. Callahan, a would-be pacifist who reattaches misplaced limbs with gusto.

As the posse tracks McFarland, they soon realize they themselves are being pursued. The ever-courteous Abernathy Jones, as quick with his business cards as he is with his deadly cane, is out to settle an old score from the sheriff's prezombie past, though exactly what he wants is anyone's guess.

Even more troubling, the sheriff begins to hear rumors that the true reason for his friends' abduction is to provide test subjects for the sadistic experiments of the mysterious Dr. Gimmler-Heichman.

The Zombie Sheriff Takes Tucson A Love Story is the absurd, tongue-through-cheek tale of reanimated cowboys, undying love, and the lengths to which one zombie will go for justice. And for brains.

The Zombie Sheriff Takes Tucson A Love Story (Audible Audio Edition) Brian South Rich Miller Books

The Zombie Sheriff is a book I was privileged enough to hear about as it was being worked on a few years ago. Having now read the final product, I can safely say that if you like zombies, The-Man-With-No-Name type characters, or movies, chances are you will at least like some parts of this book. If you like all three, you will enjoy it even more. The Sheriff is reminiscent of Clint Eastwood to a fault, and his deputy/apprentice, Wilson, reads very much like an Indiana Jones sidekick.

Like a lot of Westerns, The Sheriff comes upon towns in crisis, damsels in distress, and others in need and helps them the best he can. Gradually, concrete plot elements are laid down. A war between the ghouls and slickskins (the living and breathing humans) is on the brink, and a woman, Jezebel, that the Sheriff meets and falls in love with is in need of some rescuing. What's wonderful about having this book in 2015, is that Jezebel's character does not there; she ends up being just as able (if not more so) than the Sheriff. Every time a plot point in a typical story like this might come up (ie: the woman is sent back home instead of helping to fight like she wants), Brian South plays along for a little while, and then subverts it - each time demonstrating just how strong Jezebel is.

Special mention should go to the development of some of the supporting characters - they have their dimensions and serve vital purpose to the plot. Even some of the smaller characters get their chance to shine for a chapter or two - leaving hope that there might be other stories to tell in this world the author has created.

Not everything's rosy though. While this is easily the most well edited self-published book I've read from Amazon yet, it could still have used another look-see. Some descriptions are unclear, and sometimes pacing is sacrificed for a punchline or reference. Brian takes care to reference (and I suppose parody) a few famous movie scenes over the course of the movie. Some of them are clever, but others can get in the way, like the reenactment of the end of Casablanca. Once reference in particular, for which a whole chapter is devoted, really seemed out of place and unneeded. How the ghouls came to be is also never explained, and whether or not that matters depends on the individual.

As a debut novel, Brian South has done a good job. The ending keeps the reader hopefully waiting for more stories to be told in this created world. He can only get better with his next project, and pretty soon, I suspect, we'll see him hit his stride as a writer.

Fun little novel to read
I loved this book! It took me a little while to get into the plot, but once I did, the story moved quickly. The opening segments of each chapter were hilarious and witty. The book ended with the hope of a sequel. Give us more, Brian
This is the epicurean zombie's guide to fine dining. Who knew there were so many ways to prepare brains. Zombie Sheriff is a fun, imaginative read. The only thing missing is an index of recipes.
Loin soaked in urine marinade, anyone?
A awesome zombie novel with a superb & extremely funny cast of characters can't wait for the next novel of the zombie sheriff!!!!
A great, fast run through some well-worn genre conventions. It's all there in the title. It has the backbone of a Western, but the hero is undead. South writes with the sensibility of "Hitchhiker's Guide," but he also borrows some iconic moments from 80s and 90s pop culture to further break the fourth wall. Highly recommended postmodern beach read for the George Romero fan who always dreamt of taking a DeLorean to 88. I can't wait for the sequel.
This book is hilarious. The comedic enjoyment is only heightened by the unique voice and careful phrasing used by South. Its rare these days to find a work of fiction that is as creative and engaging, while upholding the integrity of what a written novel should be. I loved reading from the zombie perspective, and the inherent questioning of Love and Humanity throughout brings an element of maturity to the otherwise lighthearted, paranormal, brain-tastic adventure. Points for originality.
Full disclosure The author and I are old euchre partners from back in our college days, and much like in those games, he gives you just enough of a hint of the cards he's holding without tipping his hand completely, while still managing to keep a surprise ace up his sleeve.

Card metaphors aside, this is an extremely solid and enjoyable debut effort from Mr. South. He takes several well-worn tropes and makes you look at them with fresh (undead) eyes. This is the real strength of his book. The perspective, the deadpan, the anachronism, the pacing all come together in a story that doesn't get bogged down in exposition, yet still feels like a fully realized world.

I was left wanting to continue living and having adventures in this post-Zombified America, and hope I get the chance to.
